Bishop John’s Introduction:
GREAT TRUTHS AND PASTORAL COMFORTS
The “I am” sayings of Jesus Christ were studied by bishops from all around the world gathered in Canterbury, England for the Lambeth Conference 2008.
The Bible study groups were diverse. I was with bishops from India, England, USA and a monk from Italy. We also had two visitors for a couple of days each – Cardinal Walter Kaspar and Bishop Brian Farrell of the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Christian Unity. This was a privileged time of sharing and learning together around God’s word.
The studies helped us deepen our discipleship and learn of the One who claimed for himself the divine name, “I am”:
- “I am the bread of life”
- “I am the light of the world”
- “I am the true vine”
- “I am the way and the truth and the life”
- “I am the resurrection and the life”
- “I am the good shepherd”
Jesus of Nazareth is claiming that he is the God who revealed himself to Moses as, “I am who I am.” And of whom Moses was to say to the Israelites, “I am has sent me to you.” (Exodus 3:13-15).
These studies in the Gospel according to John then cut to the heart of who Jesus claims to be and the pastoral comforts that these great truths bring to our lives.
May God guide, guard and bless you in these great truths and the comforts they bring.
