Good news<\/strong> from the Federal Govt’s review of chaplaincy services in schools:<\/p>\n

A FEDERAL investigation into the Christian group that provides religious\u00a0 education in Victorian schools has found no evidence that its chaplains tried to\u00a0 convert students in breach of government guidelines.<\/p>\n

But\u00a0 federal Education Minister Peter Garrett said the investigation\u00a0 found\u00a0\u00a0 there had been no breach of the guidelines and no further action would be taken.\u00a0 He\u00a0 said he had received an explanation for the comments made by Dr Paddison and\u00a0 was satisfied the group was not trying to convert students.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Awaiting news<\/strong> in October of the\u00a0Victorian Education Department’s investigation into proselytising in religious instruction classes.<\/p>\n

Legal challenge<\/strong> continues:<\/p>\n

The finding comes as Victoria announced it had joined a Queensland father in\u00a0 challenging the constitutional validity of the national school chaplaincy\u00a0 program, arguing the scheme is beyond the federal government’s powers.<\/p>\n

Legal observers believe the case is a test of the ability of the federal\u00a0 government to use its financial muscle to bypass the states and directly fund\u00a0 programs in areas that have been considered state responsibilities.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
