{"id":6568,"date":"2010-12-26T21:25:00","date_gmt":"2010-12-26T10:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/imaginarydiocese.org\/bishopjohn\/?p=6568"},"modified":"2011-01-01T16:18:29","modified_gmt":"2011-01-01T05:18:29","slug":"christmas-day-sermon-2010","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/imaginarydiocese.org\/bishopjohn\/2010\/12\/26\/christmas-day-sermon-2010\/","title":{"rendered":"Christmas Day Sermon 2010"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>CHRISTMAS DAY 2010 \u2013 St David\u2019s Cathedral Hobart<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bible Readings:\u00a0 John 1:1-14 and Colossians 1:15-20<\/p>\n<p>NOTES FOR SERMON<\/p>\n<p>CONTEXT: Cathedral Church with Christmas theme, \u201cChristmas is cooking at the Cathedral\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cMASTERCHRIST: DOES YOUR CHRISTMAS HAVE A MISSING INGREDIENT?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>OUTLINE<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Introduction<\/li>\n<li>Revelation<\/li>\n<li>Response\/ Invitation<\/li>\n<li>Reconciliation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>INTRODUCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My grandmother made a lemon meringue pie \u2013 it is the best lemon meringue pie in the world!<\/p>\n<p>How do I know it is the best lemon meringue pie in the world?<\/p>\n<p>Because I eat lemon meringue pie at every opportunity, everywhere!<\/p>\n<p>But nothing has ever compared to my grandmother\u2019s lemon meringue pie.<\/p>\n<p>And yet, a strange fact: no matter how wonderful my grandmother\u2019s lemon meringue pies were; without lemon they were not a lemon meringue pie!<\/p>\n<p>And so to my recipe for Christmas:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For my Christmas recipe, Christ is the essential ingredient.<\/p>\n<p>Without Christ, Christmas just isn\u2019t Christmas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. REVELATION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At Christmas God became human.<\/p>\n<p>The astounding news of Christmas is that God so loves us that He becomes one with us in our humanity.<\/p>\n<p>One of the names of Jesus Christ is, \u2018Emmanuel\u2019 which means \u2018God with us\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Christ is \u201cGod with us\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Christ reveals God.<\/p>\n<p>Christ is the Word of God: God communicated to us.<\/p>\n<p>Hear the opening words from the Gospel according to John: (1:1ff\u00a0Amplified Bible)<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u00a0<strong><sup>1<\/sup><\/strong>IN THE beginning [before all time] was the Word (Christ), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God Himself.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong><sup>2<\/sup><\/strong>He was present originally with God.<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>3<\/sup><\/strong>All things were made and came into existence through Him; and without Him was not even one thing made that has come into being.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong><sup>4<\/sup><\/strong>In Him was Life, and the Life was the Light of men.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong><sup>14<\/sup><\/strong>And the Word (Christ) became flesh (human, incarnate) and tabernacled (fixed His tent of flesh, lived awhile) among us; and we [actually] saw His glory (His honor, His majesty), such glory as an only begotten son receives from his father, full of grace (favor, loving-kindness) and truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Incredible! Amazing! Earth shattering! World saving!<\/p>\n<p>I entitled my <strong>CHRISTMAS MESSAGE <\/strong>published in the Tasmanian newspapers today \u2013 <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/imaginarydiocese.org\/bishopjohn\/2010\/12\/25\/bishops-christmas-message-2010\/\">WikiLeaks and Jesus Christ<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jesus and WikiLeaks! \u2013 What do they have in common?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/imaginarydiocese.org\/bishopjohn\/2010\/12\/09\/wikileaks-raises-many-a-question\/\">WikiLeaks<\/a> has been revealing the secret thoughts of diplomats and national leaders. \u00a0We Australians are divided over whether WikiLeaks is a hero or a villain.<\/p>\n<p>I suggest to you that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">if revelation is the name of the game<\/span>, then WikiLeaks and Jesus Christ have a lot going for them:<\/p>\n<p>both WikiLeaks and Jesus Christ seek to reveal what is hidden; both want truth outed; both seek the welfare of the city.<\/p>\n<p>But it is also true that both founders are persecuted; both make enemies of the powerful; both are attacked; both attract condemnation and affirmation.<\/p>\n<p>We ask:\u00a0 *Does the revealing of new information bring benefit or harm?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">WikiLeaks may benefit<\/span> the people by increasing the accountability of political and powerful leaders; albeit through their fear of the truth being made known!<\/p>\n<p>But some feel that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">WikiLeaks may harm<\/span> the reputations or even<strong> <\/strong>imperil the lives of people and agencies. How? By revealing stupidity, deceit and pettiness.<\/p>\n<p>*I see a deeper meaning behind it all. I see <strong><em>WikiLeaks as a metaphor<\/em><\/strong> for divine meaning.<\/p>\n<p>Please listen carefully.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Jesus Christ may benefit<\/span> the people by inviting them to be reconciled to God and to one another as He reveals humankind\u2019s true spirituality, centre of being, identity and purpose.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Jesus Christ may harm<\/span> the religious establishment by revealing the true centre of God and showing the falsehood of empty religious ritual and legalistic religion. Jesus Christ may harm the powerful by revealing the power of sacrifice and love.<\/p>\n<p>A further question:\u00a0 *Where is truth to be found?<\/p>\n<p>WikiLeaks says by revealing all the information.<\/p>\n<p>Christ says that in his own person, the way, the truth and the life are found.<\/p>\n<p>*How is transformation achieved?<\/p>\n<p>WikiLeaks proposes the information highway.<\/p>\n<p>Christ proposes spiritual renewal through turning from ego to Christ; to love of God and neighbour.<\/p>\n<p>Christ proposes transformation through turning to Him!<\/p>\n<p>Christmas is the revealing of Christ.<\/p>\n<p>In revealing Christ, Christmas reveals God.<\/p>\n<p>This is what we proclaim today.<\/p>\n<p>This is what we sing today.<\/p>\n<p>This is what was proclaimed by the earliest Christians.<\/p>\n<p>This is what was sung by the earliest Christians. (Colossians 1:15-20)<\/p>\n<p>*We affirm with confidence:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">To <strong><em>know<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Christ was \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0to\u00a0 know\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 God\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<li>To <strong><em>see<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 Christ was \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0to\u00a0 see\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 God\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">To <strong><em>believe in<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 Christ was\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0to\u00a0 believe in\u00a0 God\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<li>To <strong><em>receive<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Christ was \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0to\u00a0 receive\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 God\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">To <strong><em>hate<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Christ was \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0to\u00a0 hate\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 God\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<li>To <strong><em>honour<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Christ was \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0to\u00a0 honour\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0God\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Therefore Christ can say, \u201cwhoever has seen me has seen the Father\u201d. (John 14:9)<\/p>\n<p>What a claim! Is it arrogance, madness or could it be true?<\/p>\n<p>In Christ, God the Father is revealed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. RESPONSE\/ INVITATION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Christ reveals God and invites us to be reconciled to God.<\/p>\n<p>This invitation in response to the revealing of God in Christ is integral to the Prologue of the Gospel according to John (1:12):<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cBut to as many as did receive and welcome Him, He gave the authority (power, privilege, right) to become the children of God, that is, to those who believe in (adhere to, trust in, and rely on) His name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Christ invites us to receive Him, to welcome Him, to believe in Him.<\/p>\n<p>Those who trust in Christ become children of God.<\/p>\n<p>This is a significant part of my own journey to become a Christian: \u00a0\u00a0*Relate the story of Dennis asking me, \u201cJohn, have you received, trusted in, taken hold of Christ?\u201d\u00a0. . .<\/p>\n<p>Christmas is an opportunity to strengthen our decision to trust in Christ or perhaps for some to make that foundational decision to trust in Christ, to become a Christian.<\/p>\n<p>*Relate the story of Ian making the decision to become a Christian on Christmas Day. \u201cI have a question. Does anyone recall what program is on TV at 8am this Christmas morning on Channel 7? Yes, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/continentalnews.net\/christian-news\/%E2%80%98should-we-cancel-christmas%E2%80%99-4197.html\">Should We Cancel Christmas?<\/a>\u201d. Let me tell some of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christiantelevision.org.au\/swcc\">Ian\u2019s story on the road to Christ on Christmas Day<\/a>. . [Segment Four of TV -Vimeo]\u00a0. .<\/p>\n<p>Christ invites us to place our trust in Him.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.
