{"id":5595,"date":"2010-10-12T12:52:40","date_gmt":"2010-10-12T01:52:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/imaginarydiocese.org\/bishopjohn\/?p=5595"},"modified":"2010-10-12T12:52:40","modified_gmt":"2010-10-12T01:52:40","slug":"euthanasia-and-elder-abuse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/imaginarydiocese.org\/bishopjohn\/2010\/10\/12\/euthanasia-and-elder-abuse\/","title":{"rendered":"Euthanasia and Elder abuse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The more I consider\u00a0legislation for euthanasia\/assisted suicide\/medical killing the more concerned I become.<\/p>\n<p>Concerned for whom? &#8211;\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>For the elderly, people living with disabilities and all vulnerable people<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Why my concern for them?<span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong> Because\u00a0I do not believe assisted suicide\u00a0can ever be enacted without the possibility of abuse.<\/strong><\/span> The measure of a society is its protection of the elderly, people living with\u00a0disabilities, infants, children: the vulnerable. Assisted suicide weakens the protection and care of our more vulnerable members. This is weakens our society, our community. This is a wrong turn.\u00a0Do not enter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose who believe that legalizing euthanasia and\/or assisted-suicide will assure their \u2018choice,\u2019 are naive.\u201d<br \/>\n(William Reichel, MD, Coeur d\u2019Alene Press, June 30, 2010) quoted by\u00a0Margaret K. Dore who writes,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThese acts (legalizing euthanasia\/ assisted suicide)\u00a0empower heirs and others to pressure and abuse older people to cut short their lives. This is especially an issue when the older person has money.<span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong> There is no assisted-suicide bill that you can write to correct this huge problem<\/strong><\/span>.\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>Patients are not necessarily dying<br \/>\n<\/strong>Oregon and Washington\u2019s acts apply to \u201cterminal\u201d patients, defined as having no more than six months to live. Such patients are not necessarily dying. Doctor prognoses can be wrong. Moreover, treatment can lead to recovery. Oregon resident, Jeanette Hall, who was diagnosed with cancer and told that she had six months to a year to live, states:<br \/>\n<em>&#8221; I wanted to do our law and I wanted my doctor to help me. Instead, he encouraged me to not give up and ultimately I decided to fight. I had both chemotherapy and radiation.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>&#8221; It is now nearly 10 years later. If my doctor had believed in assisted\u00a0suicide, I would be dead.&#8221; <\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>See her detailed legal article,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.margaretdore.com\/pdf\/Not_Legal_in_Idaho.pdf\">Aid in\u00a0Dying: Not Legal in\u00a0Idaho; Not about Choice<\/a>.\u00a0 This and other comments pro and against assisted suicide\/ euthanasia\u00a0follow the sad article,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.spokesman.com\/stories\/2010\/sep\/26\/suicide-like-execution\/\">Suicide like execution<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Among other comment, eg\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.themercury.com.au\/article\/2010\/10\/09\/177881_opinion.html\">Sue Neales,&#8217;Pollies dodge blame&#8217;<\/a>, a\u00a0letter to the editor in yesterday&#8217;s Mercury\u00a0Hobart newspaper, page 23, by\u00a0M.E.Klitzke, Midway Point, captured our inability to guarantee protection of\u00a0the vulnerable members of our community.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Euthanasia trust lost<\/strong>. A vulnerable child unable to be protected by this Government and legal services, a maximum-security prison which is anything but secure built by this Government and now the Attorney-General, along with Greens leader Nick McKim, will try to convince us that this Government can produce sufficiently safe legislation to protect vulnerable members of our community against involuntary euthanasia. I for one have zero confidence they have the ability to offer such protection.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>I count myself\u00a0among the many Tasmanians who &#8220;have zero confidence that they (the Government) have the ability to offer such protection.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>For the sake of our society in general\u00a0and the elderly, people living with disabilities and the vulnerable in particular,\u00a0please Attorney-General Lara Gidding\u00a0and Nick McKim, do not go ahead with this legislation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The more I consider\u00a0legislation for euthanasia\/assisted suicide\/medical killing the more concerned I become.
