{"id":5188,"date":"2010-08-30T19:39:19","date_gmt":"2010-08-30T08:39:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/imaginarydiocese.org\/bishopjohn\/?p=5188"},"modified":"2010-08-30T19:39:19","modified_gmt":"2010-08-30T08:39:19","slug":"port-arthur-penalise-and-rehabilitate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/imaginarydiocese.org\/bishopjohn\/2010\/08\/30\/port-arthur-penalise-and-rehabilitate\/","title":{"rendered":"Port Arthur: penalise and rehabilitate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We have been spending a few days on the Tasman Peninsula and have visited the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.portarthur.org.au\/\">Port Arthur historic convict precinct <\/a>on a number of occasions.<\/p>\n<p>On a site\u00a0tour our excellent guide, Mark, described the thinking that shaped the convict penal settlement. Jeremy Bentham was the English penal reformer who believed a model penal settlement was &#8216;a machine for grinding rogues into honest men&#8217;.\u00a0This reformer&#8217;s thinking determined five key aspects of penal life:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>classification and separation<\/li>\n<li>discipline and control\/punishment<\/li>\n<li>architecture and the built environment<\/li>\n<li>moral formation: religion, education and training<\/li>\n<li>it&#8217;s all about money! (financial resourcing)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I expect these five aspects are still important but the ways in which they are carried out by today&#8217;s penal\/corrective services differ significantly from those of Port Arthur&#8217;s days. See for example, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.justice.tas.gov.au\/correctiveservices\">Corrective Services, Tasmania<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At a general level, the issue of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">restoration\/rehabilitation of relationships in all areas of our community life are\u00a0a vital issue<\/span> for us in 21st century Australian society.<\/p>\n<p>I have recently attended a <a href=\"http:\/\/imaginarydiocese.org\/bishopjohn\/2010\/08\/14\/peace-conflict-and-grace\/\">PeaceWise course <\/a>on conflict resolution and for a new reforming model of\u00a0restorative justice within a school context\u00a0see, <a href=\"http:\/\/imaginarydiocese.org\/bishopjohn\/2009\/05\/05\/restorative-ways-of-healing-and-living-healthy-relationships\/\">Restorative ways of healing and living healthy relationships<\/a>.
