Ten years ago <\/a>a most solemn prayer\u00a0re-ordered my life:\u00a0<\/em>The Laying on of Hands at the ordination of a bishop<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong>The bishop-elect kneels before the Primate, who says<\/p>\n

Blessed are you, Lord our God!<\/address>\n
You have given us your only Son<\/address>\n
to be the Apostle and High Priest of our faith,<\/address>\n
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 and the Shepherd of our souls.<\/address>\n
Exalted as Lord of all,<\/address>\n
he poured out the Spirit and gave gifts to your people,<\/address>\n
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 making some to be apostles, some prophets,<\/address>\n
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 some evangelists, some pastors and teachers,<\/address>\n
to equip the saints for the work of ministry,<\/address>\n
and to build up the body of Christ.<\/address>\n
And now we give you thanks<\/address>\n
that you have called your servant John <\/address>\n
whom we consecrate in your name,<\/address>\n
to the ministry of bishop in your Church.<\/address>\n

Here the Primate and bishops present lay their hands on the head of the bishop-elect, the Primate saying<\/p>\n

Send down the Holy Spirit upon your servant John<\/address>\n
whom we set apart by the laying on of our hands,<\/address>\n
for the office and work of a bishop in your Church.<\/address>\n
\u00a0<\/address>\n
Fill\u00a0your servant, merciful God, with grace and power,<\/address>\n
that\u00a0he may always be ready to proclaim<\/address>\n
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the good news of salvation.<\/address>\n
Fill\u00a0his heart with love of you and your people,<\/address>\n
that he may feed and tend the flock of Christ.<\/address>\n
Give\u00a0him humility, and defend him from all evil,<\/address>\n
that he may exercise without reproach the office of bishop,<\/address>\n
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 using its authority to heal, and not to hurt,<\/address>\n
\u00a0\u00a0 to build up, and not destroy.<\/address>\n
Accept our prayer through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with you and the Holy Spirit<\/address>\n
belong glory and honour, worship and praise, now and for ever. Amen.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/address>\n
