{"id":355,"date":"2009-06-15T10:26:10","date_gmt":"2009-06-14T23:26:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/imaginarydiocese.org\/bishopjohn\/?p=355"},"modified":"2009-06-26T17:01:16","modified_gmt":"2009-06-26T06:01:16","slug":"the-human-right-is-to-live-not-to-demand-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/imaginarydiocese.org\/bishopjohn\/2009\/06\/15\/the-human-right-is-to-live-not-to-demand-death\/","title":{"rendered":"The human right is to live, not to demand death"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.themercury.com.au\/article\/2009\/06\/01\/77025_print.html\">recent opinion piece<\/a><\/span> arguing pro euthanasia in Tasmania, two human rights, dignity and privacy, were joined to argue for the human right to demand death; &#8216;dignified death is a right&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>This conclusion is not just contrary to the right to life but it runs counter to the whole flow of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/documents\/udhr\/\">Universal Declaration of Human Rights<\/a><\/span> which is about life, about living. The human right is to live, not to demand death.<\/p>\n<p>The opinion piece raises a more general issue which concerns the effectiveness of a charter or bill of human rights to protect and promote human rights in Australia. The use of the Declaration of Human Rights to demand a right which was neither included nor I suggest intended, moves me from <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/imaginarydiocese.org\/bishopjohn\/2009\/05\/06\/do-we-aussies-need-a-charter-of-human-rights\/\">my fence sitting on the need for a charter or bill of human rights in Australia<\/a><\/span> to deep concerns about having such a charter. If the Universal Declaration on Human Rights can be used to join two rights which have nothing to do with demanding death to argue for the right to demand death, then I for one am deeply disturbed at our having such a charter or bill.<\/p>\n<p>I do not want to see the legal captivity of &#8216;unintended human rights&#8217;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a recent opinion piece arguing pro euthanasia in Tasmania, two human rights, dignity and privacy, were joined to argue for the human right to demand death; &#8216;dignified death is a right&#8217;.
