{"id":3407,"date":"2010-04-08T10:15:21","date_gmt":"2010-04-07T23:15:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/imaginarydiocese.org\/bishopjohn\/?p=3407"},"modified":"2010-04-12T13:02:55","modified_gmt":"2010-04-12T02:02:55","slug":"celebrating-tasmanias-firsts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/imaginarydiocese.org\/bishopjohn\/2010\/04\/08\/celebrating-tasmanias-firsts\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating Tasmania&#8217;s &#8216;firsts&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left\">On Sunday 28th February we celebrated the first sermon preached on Tasmanian soil and\u00a0the first Church built\u00a0in Tasmania, as part of\u00a0the <em>Big Day Out<\/em>\u00a0service of St David&#8217;s Cathedral.<\/p>\n<p>We started off\u00a0walking from the Cathedral to Hobart Town Hall where the <em>first sermon was preached\u00a0 <\/em>by the Reverend Robert (Bobby) Knopwood on 26th February 1804.\u00a0 On one of the columns at the Town Hall there is\u00a0a plaque commemorating this significant event in Tasmania&#8217;s Christian History.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"IMG_0211a\" src=\"http:\/\/imaginarydiocese.org\/bishopjohn\/files\/2010\/04\/IMG_0211a-645x345.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"645\" height=\"345\" \/>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>At the\u00a0Town Hall we prayed,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Gracious God and Lord of history,<\/p>\n<p>at this site of the first Church service in Hobart held in the open air we rejoice in Jesus&#8217; promise that whenever and wherever we meet in Christ&#8217;s name he is with us.<\/p>\n<p>We thank you for all faithful ministers of your word and sacraments in Tasmania past and present.<\/p>\n<p>Raise up more workers to serve in your harvest fields in all areas of this state, so that all may hear your call and praise your grace and glory.<\/p>\n<p>In Jesus&#8217; name we pray. Amen.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0The next stop was\u00a0 St David&#8217;s Park where the first Tasmanian Church building was located. If you have been to the park and stood by Lieutenant Governor David Collin&#8217;s headstone (where he was buried\u00a0in an huon pine casket), that&#8217;s where the church was located. It was built in 1810 and blew down 2 years later. St David&#8217;s Church (named in honour of Lieutenant Governor David Collins) was rebuilt in 1817 where St David&#8217;s Cathedral now stands.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3464 aligncenter\" title=\"IMG_0207\" src=\"http:\/\/imaginarydiocese.org\/bishopjohn\/files\/2010\/04\/IMG_0207-645x483.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"645\" height=\"483\" srcset=\"http:\/\/imaginarydiocese.org\/bishopjohn\/files\/2010\/04\/IMG_0207-645x483.jpg 645w, http:\/\/imaginarydiocese.org\/bishopjohn\/files\/2010\/04\/IMG_0207-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 645px) 100vw, 645px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We prayed at the site of the first Church,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Faithful God, and Father of all your people, at this site of the first Church building in Hobart we thank you that while Church buildings may come and go you will never leave or forsake your people.<\/p>\n<p>We pray that you would bless all congregations in Tasmania that gather in your Son&#8217;s name that they may use all the gifts you have given them by your Spirit that they may be healthy churches, transforming lives.<\/p>\n<p>We pray knowing that you are able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine according to your power at work in us, to your glory in the Church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever!
