{"id":2411,"date":"2010-04-18T23:11:13","date_gmt":"2010-04-18T12:11:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/imaginarydiocese.org\/bishopjohn\/?p=2411"},"modified":"2010-04-19T00:09:38","modified_gmt":"2010-04-18T13:09:38","slug":"science-and-faith","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/imaginarydiocese.org\/bishopjohn\/2010\/04\/18\/science-and-faith\/","title":{"rendered":"Science and faith"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Science and faith:\u00a0two faces of reality.<\/p>\n<p>Consider the question, <em>Why is the water boiling?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As a chemical engineer I can explain the composition of the water, the temperature and the pressure the water is under and why vapourisation of the liquid state is occuring.<\/p>\n<p>I can also say the water is boiling\u00a0because I want a cup of tea.<\/p>\n<p>Both explanations are true. They belong to two different and equally valid areas of explanation. There is no contradiction between the two statements. They are complementary. The scientific explanation of how water boils\u00a0and the\u00a0explanation of purpose, why\u00a0boiling water is wanted,\u00a0are not in opposition\u00a0to each other: they are not contradictory. We do not need to choose between them as if one is true and the other is false.<\/p>\n<p>In a similar way, I believe science and Christian faith are complementary.
