Jonah 4:5<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

5<\/sup><\/em> Jonah had gone out and sat down at a place east of the city. There he made himself a shelter, sat in its shade and waited to see what would happen to the city.<\/em><\/p>\n

Romans 5:6-8<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

6\u00a0<\/sup><\/em>You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.<\/em> 7\u00a0<\/sup>Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. 8\u00a0<\/sup>But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.<\/em><\/p>\n

Jonah had found himself a good vantage point from which to observe God\u2019s punishment come upon the city of Nineveh.<\/p>\n

Do you recall the parable of the prodigal sons and the joy of the compassionate father running through the village to welcome home the younger son who had disgraced his family and village?<\/p>\n

The parable finishes with the unanswered question about the response of the elder son who had remained home. Would this son respond positively to the Father\u2019s plea to join in the celebration of the younger son\u2019s return?\u00a0<\/sup>My son, the father said, you are always with me, and everything I have is yours.<\/em> 32\u00a0<\/sup>But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found. <\/em>(Luke 15:31,32)<\/p>\n

Do I rejoice when people turn to Christ or do I wish that they had \u2018got what they deserved\u2019? Do I love what God loves?<\/p>\n

Thomas Carlisle\u2019s poem You! Jonah!<\/em> closes with these lines:<\/p>\n

And Jonah stalked <\/em><\/p>\n

to his shaded seat <\/em><\/p>\n

and waited for God<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0to come around to his way of thinking.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0And God is still waiting for a host of Jonah\u2019s <\/em><\/p>\n

in their comfortable houses <\/em><\/p>\n

to come around to his way of loving.<\/em><\/p>\n
