2012 Australian Christian Book of the Year: <\/strong><\/p>\n

Murray Seiffert’s\u00a0<\/strong>Gumbuli\u00a0of Ngukurr<\/strong><\/em><\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

The Australian Christian Book of\u00a0the Year was announced last night at the\u00a0Australian Christian Literature Awards\u00a0in Melbourne. Gumbuli of Ngukurr <\/em>(Acorn Press)\u00a0<\/em>emerged victorious from over forty entries\u00a0submitted this year.<\/p>\n

Second prize\u00a0was awarded\u00a0to\u00a0A Short History of\u00a0Christianity<\/em>\u00a0(Viking)\u00a0by Geoffrey Blainey.\u00a0<\/strong>
\nLove, Tears and Autism: An\u00a0Australian mother’s journey from heartbreak to hope<\/em>\u00a0(Ark House) by Cecily Paterson<\/strong>\u00a0took third prize.<\/p>\n

What the judges had to say about <\/strong>Gumbuli\u00a0of Ngukurr<\/strong><\/em>:<\/strong>
\nFew indigenous\u00a0Australians have been\u00a0the subject of\u00a0so\u00a0rigorous a biography.\u00a0This is a unique and timely contribution to\u00a0the story of Aboriginal\u00a0engagement\u00a0with\u00a0western culture and Christianity.<\/p>\n

Always informative\u00a0it also, at times,\u00a0makes for\u00a0profoundly uncomfortable and\u00a0provocative\u00a0reading.\u00a0This singular story of indigenous\u00a0protagonism,\u00a0self-determination and leadership in the\u00a0face of overwhelming \u00a0 obstacles\u2014hostile opposition,\u00a0blind ignorance and numbing indifference\u2014maps a\u00a0way forward for the peoples of this continent.\u00a0The\u00a0complete judges’ comments can be found at: www.spcka.org.au<\/a><\/p>\n

\nThe Australian Christian Book of \u00a0 the Year Award\u00a0is given annually to an original book written\u00a0by an \u00a0 Australian\u00a0and published by an Australian\u00a0publisher. The Award\u00a0recognises and celebrates\u00a0excellence in Australian Christian writing\u00a0and\u00a0carries\u00a0a prize of $2,500.<\/p>\n

Entries are judged with an eye to\u00a0the: original nature of the work, literary style,\u00a0suitability for\u00a0the\u00a0target audience, competence and expertise displayed by\u00a0the\u00a0author, design and\u00a0layout and\u00a0contribution that the book\u00a0makes in meeting\u00a0a need for Christian writing in Australia.
