What needs to happen for our political leaders to act in compassion on this matter?<\/p>\n<p>State Governments gamble life and lives away through their support of\u00a0poker machine gambling &#8211; often\u00a0deceptively referred to as &#8216;gaming&#8217; [Oh, Please!].<\/p>\n<p>Some 2 years ago I wrote of <a href=\"http:\/\/imaginarydiocese.org\/bishopjohn\/2010\/07\/28\/pollies-easy-with-pokies-dis-ease\/\">Pollies ease with Pokies dis-ease<\/a> and nothing seems to have changed!<\/p>\n<p>There is no shortage of reports on the harm done to our society &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/imaginarydiocese.org\/bishopjohn\/2012\/03\/31\/cost-of-pokies-on-tasmania\/\">Cost of pokies on Tasmania<\/a>. A further recent article on the disaster in Tasmania, <a href=\"http:\/\/tasmaniantimes.com\/index.php?\/article\/pokies-plunder-continues\/\">Pokies: plunder continues.<\/a>\u00a0I strongly support the $1 bet limit and <a href=\"http:\/\/imaginarydiocese.org\/bishopjohn\/2012\/03\/28\/parliamentary-committee-1-bet-limit\/\">I have appeared before a Tasmanian Parliamentary Committee<\/a> in support of this harm reduction measure.<\/p>\n<p>Nationally, <a href=\"http:\/\/imaginarydiocese.org\/bishopjohn\/2012\/01\/21\/a-deals-a-deal-not\/\">the Prime Minister&#8217;s failure <\/a>to honour her promise for pokie reform to Andrew Wilkie was a betrayal of herself and the society with which her government is charged.<\/p>\n<p>Victoria, after 20 years of poker machine gambling, has an equally tragic story to tell, including jail for a mother of two children. Even the politicians have fallen for\u00a0 the euphemism, with the minister responsible for the machines called &#8220;the gaming\u00a0 minister&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Few problem gamblers believe poker machines are a &#8220;game&#8221;. [Amen!]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Who cares?<\/em> was the theme of\u00a0the Ministry Conference of the Anglican Church of Tasmania from which I have just returned. <em>Who cares?<\/em> Our answer: God cares, we care and we continue\u00a0in pastoral care.<\/p>\n<p>We ask our political leaders to care for people addicted to poker machine gambling. Stop the tragedy!\u00a0<em>Stop it!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Is this too much to ask &#8211; that\u00a0they care?
