{"id":10880,"date":"2012-04-07T09:34:17","date_gmt":"2012-04-06T22:34:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/imaginarydiocese.org\/bishopjohn\/?p=10880"},"modified":"2012-04-07T16:17:49","modified_gmt":"2012-04-07T05:17:49","slug":"church-flies-its-footy-colours","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/imaginarydiocese.org\/bishopjohn\/2012\/04\/07\/church-flies-its-footy-colours\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Church flies its footy colours&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Great article by Michelle Paine and great photograph by the very patient\u00a0Leigh Winburn in today&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.themercury.com.au\/article\/2012\/04\/07\/316301_tasmania-news.html\">Mercury<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>THE church, at its best, is among the people, says Anglican Bishop of Tasmania John Harrower.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With that principle in mind, St Mark&#8217;s at Bellerive decided to get involved by holding an Easter Sunday AFL Fun Day.<\/p>\n<p>The church is just around the corner from Bellerive Oval, so tomorrow thousands of footy-goers will have the chance to practise some handball, enjoy hot-cross buns or chocolate eggs or even let their children ride a donkey decked out in North Melbourne or Greater Western Sydney colours.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When we heard there was going to be an AFL match on Easter Sunday, we thought that&#8217;s a great opportunity, 15,000 people walking past the church. We wanted to join in the spirit of the day,&#8221; said Rector Stephen Carnaby.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Children and families will be walking past, they can do donkey rides, we&#8217;ll have hot-cross buns.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For us, Easter is a great celebration so we&#8217;re wanting other people to join with us at our celebration.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bishop Harrower said that while some people had concerns about football being played on Easter Sunday, there was still the opportunity to attend church in the morning.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The church, at its best, is always a church among the people,&#8221; Bishop Harrower said. &#8220;The challenge for the churches is to engage proactively with the community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Easter Sunday AFL Fun Day is from 11am to 1pm at St Mark&#8217;s Church, on the corner of Clarence and Scott streets in Bellerive.<\/p>\n<p>On offer will be donkey rides, handball games, a jumping castle, face painting, Easter eggs, hot-cross buns and coffee.<\/p>\n<p>Bishop Harrower and donkeys will be at the head of the combined churches&#8217; Awakening Easter march and rally from 2pm at Parliament House lawns.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Article, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.themercury.com.au\/article\/2012\/04\/07\/316301_tasmania-news.html\">&#8216;Church flies its footy colours&#8217;<\/a>\u00a0 and\u00a0in yesterday&#8217;s Mercury, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.themercury.com.au\/article\/2012\/04\/06\/315991_tasmania-news.html\">Easter story needs retelling<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>From Bellerive James Veltmeyer speaks of the football outreach, <a href=\"http:\/\/jamesanita.blogspot.com.au\/2012\/04\/easter-fun-day-bellerive.html\">Easter Sunday AFL Fun Day<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>My Easter message was also in yesterday&#8217;s Mercury(print edition), <a href=\"http:\/\/imaginarydiocese.org\/bishopjohn\/2012\/04\/06\/our-hope-everywhere-always-easter-2012\/\">Our hope, everywhere, always<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Great article by Michelle Paine and great photograph by the very patient\u00a0Leigh Winburn in today&#8217;s Mercury.
