{"id":14255,"date":"2013-09-27T14:29:54","date_gmt":"2013-09-27T03:29:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/imaginarydiocese.org\/bishopjohn\/?page_id=14255"},"modified":"2013-09-27T14:35:00","modified_gmt":"2013-09-27T03:35:00","slug":"sixteen-days-with-jonah-day-6","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/imaginarydiocese.org\/bishopjohn\/studies\/jonah\/sixteen-days-with-jonah-day-6\/","title":{"rendered":"Sixteen Days with Jonah &#8211; Day 6"},"content":{"rendered":"<p lang=\"en-US\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><i style=\"line-height: 1.4em;\"><b>Jonah 1:17<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<sup><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span><i>17<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span><i> Now the LORD provided a huge fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span><i><b>Matthew 12:38-41<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<sup><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span><i>38<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span><i> Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, \u201cTeacher, we want to see a sign from you.\u201d <\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<sup><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span><i>39<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span><i> He answered, \u201cA wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. <\/i><\/span><\/span><sup><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span><i>40<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span><i> For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. <\/i><\/span><\/span><sup><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span><i>41<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span><i> The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now something greater than Jonah is here. <\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\">God acts! God uses storms, sailors and a fish to save Jonah in order to save Nineveh. God does not give up on his reluctant servant. Through His servant\u2019s salvation, God has the salvation of many people in mind. <\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\">While visiting the catacombs in Rome, I was struck by the symbol of Jonah and the fish on Christians\u2019 graves. Do you recall Jesus\u2019 reference to Jonah\u2019s three days in the belly of the fish? When asked by the Pharisees and teachers of the law for a sign as to his own significance, Jesus answered, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><i>A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\">. (Matthew 12:39-40)<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\">In Jesus\u2019 understanding, Jonah is a sign pointing to Jesus\u2019 resurrection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\">If God is God, then resurrection life is real. In the words of Martin Luther, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><i>Let God be God<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\">. Enormous historical evidence points to the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and this in turn points to God. Belief in God who is <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><i>the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"> (Jonah 1:9) leads to resurrection faith.<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><i>God of Life, in the power of your Holy Spirit may my life be a sign to all around me of Jesus\u2019 resurrection life.
