{"id":14248,"date":"2013-09-27T14:26:15","date_gmt":"2013-09-27T03:26:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/imaginarydiocese.org\/bishopjohn\/?page_id=14248"},"modified":"2013-09-27T14:34:50","modified_gmt":"2013-09-27T03:34:50","slug":"sixteen-days-with-jonah-day-4","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/imaginarydiocese.org\/bishopjohn\/studies\/jonah\/sixteen-days-with-jonah-day-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Sixteen Days with Jonah &#8211; Day 4"},"content":{"rendered":"<p lang=\"en-US\"><i><b>Jonah 1:4-10<\/b><\/i><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<sup><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span><i>4<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span><i> Then the LORD sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up. <\/i><\/span><\/span><sup><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span><i>5<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span><i> All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship. <\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span><i>But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep. <\/i><\/span><\/span><sup><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span><i>6<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span><i> The captain went to him and said, \u201cHow can you sleep? Get up and call on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us so that we will not perish.\u201d <\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<sup><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span><i>7<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span><i> Then the sailors said to each other, \u201cCome, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity.\u201d They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah. <\/i><\/span><\/span><sup><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span><i>8<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span><i> So they asked him, \u201cTell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What kind of work do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?\u201d <\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<sup><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span><i>9<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span><i> He answered, \u201cI am a Hebrew and I worship the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.\u201d <\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<sup><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span><i>10<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span><i> This terrified them and they asked, \u201cWhat have you done?\u201d (They knew he was running away from the LORD, because he had already told them so.) <\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\">This passage captivates my imagination. Here in the midst of a storm-tossed sea, a tumbling fragile ship, sleeping prophet and the desperate cries to various gods, the terrified sailors call the prophet to account. <\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\">How ironic. The sailors are calling on their gods because of the prophet\u2019s denial of God\u2019s call on him! <\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\">The sailors cast lots, conclude that Jonah is responsible for the storm and confront him. The prophet confesses, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><i>I am a Hebrew and I worship the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\">. Again, what irony! If Jonah truly believed that the LORD is the God who made the sea, then surely he would never have sought to flee from the LORD by going by sea! <\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\">Yet, as we see in the next reading, through the prophet\u2019s disobedience, God is bringing the sailors to acknowledge Him, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><i>the LORD<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\">I just love the captain\u2019s, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><i>(Jonah) how can you sleep? Get up and call on your God! <\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\">The slumbering prophet is called to duty by an outsider! <\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><i>Creator God, how easy it is for me to talk the talk, but not walk the walk of faith. Forgive me for the times when my life has denied your Lordship over all. Help me not to flee from you, but to entrust all to you.
